30 Celebrities Regretted Their Red Carpet Choices
TRENDING FEBRUARY 28, 2023
Christina Aguilera
Christina Aguilera’s style journey has been somewhat of a roller coaster with many highs and a few lows. Unfortunately, this ripped creation that she wore to the 2001 Blockbuster Awards belongs to the latter category.
The velvet dress was slashed across the center of her torso and ended in loose shreds around her legs. If that wasn’t over-the-top enough, the big wig and the chunky gold jewelry took things to the next level. Thankfully, she’s come a long way from her midriff-bearing days. Her style these days is much more elegant, and we love it! Emily Ratajkowski The stunning model, Emily Ratajkowski, disappointed us a little with the golden outfit worn at the Golden Globes After-Party. Well, quite possible that we expect too much from her, but this certainly was not our favorite look of her’s!
Emily is never shy of making bold choices as we can evidently see, but this outfit has a rather embarrassing story. While posing for the paps, she had a wardrobe malfunction, let us just blame it on the weirdly cut out slits. Though, one thing we cannot help but notice is the confidence she carries while she walks the red carpet and that has to be the best part! Kim Kardashian The original star of the ‘Kardashian Family,’ Kim has come a long way since her assistant days. When she’s not playing supermom to her four kids, Kimmie handles multiple business ventures, manages her social media presence, and lights up every red carpet event.
Even the best celebrities fumble, like Kim at the 2013 Met Gala. The star was pregnant at the time and chose to show off her baby belly in a floral print dress by Givenchy. Unfortunately for her, the print was too distracting and ended up becoming the subject of many memes. Lady Gaga Over the years, Lady Gaga has dared to go where no star has ever gone before by choosing some outlandish red carpet outfits. While we commend the singer for not shying away from risks, her picks sometimes end up being more of a miss than a hit.
At the UK premiere of her award-winning movie, ‘A Star is Born,’ Gaga appeared in an Elizabethan-inspired Alexander McQueen gown. With a ruffle collar, three-dimensional gold and pearl embroidery, and organza jacquard lace all over, the dress made quite the statement. It was undoubtedly avant-garde but looked almost too costumey even for the adventurous superstar. Katy Perry Katy Perry seldom regrets her fashion choices, no matter how crazy they may seem to the rest of the world. While fans love this quality in her, we can’t help but wonder what was going on in her mind when she wore this Balmain gown to the 2019 Grammys.
The pink ruffled dress with a silver ombre bodice made her look like a cake with layers of pink frosting. Katy teamed it with mismatched earrings and wore her hair slicked back. The singer’s nickname is ‘fruit sister’ in China, but after this, she’ll probably be called ‘cupcake sister!’ Christina Aguilera Christina Aguilera’s style journey has been somewhat of a roller coaster with many highs and a few lows.
Rachel Weisz Latex isn’t the most forgiving material, especially in when in public, as proven by Rachel Weisz’s gown at the 2019 Oscars. The talented actress who was nominated for her powerful performance in ‘The Favourite’ didn’t quite impress critics with her choice of clothing.
The Givenchy dress featured a loose latex top over a pleated embellished skirt that reminded many of Britney Spears’ costume in her ‘Oops I Did it Again’ video. While that may not have been her intention, at least we can all agree that the color looked ravishing on her! Nicki Minaj Popstar Nicki Minaj is anything but boring, especially when it comes to her red carpet outfits. She loves to stand out even if that means getting criticized for her over the top choices.
During the 2011 Grammy’s, Nicki sported a top to bottom leopard look by Givenchy Couture. It was complete with a Frankenstein-like wig with spots and leopard shoes. While some people loved her creativity, most agreed that this wasn’t the diva’s most flattering look. What we love most, however, is the confidence with which she carries herself no matter what! Uma Thurman It doesn’t hurt to take a little risk when it comes to fashion as long as you know when to stop. Evidently, Uma Thurman took it too far at the 2004 Academy Awards. The Christian Lacroix dress ended up looking more like an arts and crafts project than red carpet couture.
The ill-fitting layers, excessive lace, and the odd gold and blue embroidered pieces left everyone wondering what exactly Uma was thinking. It may not have been her brightest sartorial moment, but the icon gets a pass for pushing the boundaries! Cardi B Be it singing or fashion, Cardi B’s style is not for the faint-hearted, and that’s why we love her. Unfortunately, her unpredictable style doesn’t always win hearts, like the time she wore this floral number to the 2018 AMA.
The Dolce and Gabbana creation received mixed reviews, with many comparing it to vintage curtains. She probably could have made the dress work, but the matching headpiece and voluminous skirt were a tad excessive. Despite all that, we can’t help but admire her fearless attitude towards fashion. Never stop trying, Cardi! Cher In case you’re wondering why Cher wore an outfit like this to the 1986 Oscars, trust us, we are also looking for its answer to date! The celeb probably wanted to show off her well-toned physique, but there must have been better attires for this purpose.
Further, that weird headdress looks like its designer had his finger in an electric socket while curating it! Hopefully, none got hurt there! We don’t know what is worse, Cher’s skirt and top or that headgear. We’ll leave it up to you – which one would you pick? Meghan Markle Better luck next time is what we can say after seeing this red carpet or more like yellow carpet outfit for the The Lion King premiere. Meghan Markle’s basic black dress with sheer sleeves did not manage to win our hearts.
If we could ignore the outfit for a minute and talk about Duchess Meghan walking down the carpet with her husband, Prince Harry, it was definitely a cute moment for us, and the paparazzi did go crazy! We are confident she will come back with something better and grander whenever she graces the red carpet again.
Sharon Stone Sometimes award shows are filled with fashion mishaps. Case in point: Sharon Stone’s choice of this little black dress for the 1993 MTV Movie Awards night! Too simple, don’t you agree?
She might have taken two trophies home that day, but more than that, the actress was in the headlines for her hilarious feathered headgear. And mind you, Sharon also wore sunglasses while giving her acceptance speech! We wish we had this kind of confidence! With her impressive smile and beautiful features, Sharon can probably get away with anything in the world, let alone an imperfect outfit!
Heidi Klum We don’t know what to say about Heidi Klum’s red carpet outfit for the amfAR Gala night. The talented actress was in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons! It looks like she did not have anything prepared for the event, and in haste, she wrapped around a long piece of blue cloth!
Had it been true, we would have considered this flop show, but Stéphane Rolland actually designed the shapeless garment. The only thing we appreciate about this ensemble is that it had pockets! That’s rare in such over the top attires!
Gwyneth Paltrow For the 1999 Academy Awards, Gwyneth Paltrow styled a pink taffeta gown designed by the famous fashion label Ralph Lauren. The dress is not so bad, but it is not over the top either! Based on her previous looks, she has set the style quotient relatively high, and this ensemble did not meet our expectations.
While we appreciate the strappy V-necklined top of the gown, its long flowy bottom was everywhere. It looks like the celeb herself had a hard time walking in it! And we don’t know why Gwyneth carried a matching stole with her outfit; it was totally unnecessary! Faith Hill Faith Hill certainly made heads turn when she turned up in this unique Versace gown at the 74th Academy Awards. Unfortunately for her, it was more out of confusion than awe.
It was a multi-colored pastel gown with feather details that made Hill look like a mermaid, but not in a flattering way. The whole ensemble screamed costume and didn’t do any justice whatsoever to the gorgeous star. Perhaps, hues look best when you only stick to one shade. Fashion risks don’t always pay off, and sadly for the country singer, this was one of those times.
Bella Hadid The gorgeous looking model, Bella Hadid is known to carry even the most daring outfits pretty well. There are not many occasions where we find her go wrong unless it is the Cannes Film Festival 2017 where she had an oops moment with many wardrobe malfunctions on the red carpet.
The slits were a bit too high and revealed much more than she wanted to. The positive factor that we find here is the stunning Bulgari neckpiece which seems to be an inspiration from the movie Titanic. Let us hope Bella is careful next time and plans well ahead to avoid embarrassing slip-ups. Anne Hathaway Anne Hathaway’s red carpet fashion has also evolved with time, but let’s travel back to 2002 when the actress wore a bizarrely casual outfit for Steven Spielberg’s E.T.’s 20th-anniversary premiere.
No doubt, Anne is a natural beauty, and she can look glamorous in any attire, but a little makeup and a fashionable garment wouldn’t hurt anyone! We fail to understand why she wore a mid-calf length golden skirt with a loose white unbuttoned shirt for such an iconic event. Thanks to Anne’s flattering smile, we get past this flop show in a heartbeat!
Madonna Ever since her first on-stage performance, Madonna’s fans would count on the celeb to know about updated fashion and get inspiration from her stylish outfits. She’d hit the nail mostly, but sometimes she missed as well! Madonna wore one such disappointing dress at the VH1 Awards in 1998.
This disaster may be over two decades old, but in this yellow satin ball gown, the singer looked like one of the gothic princesses of Disney! If you’d search carefully, some of her poses from the iconic event will surely make you agree with us.
Kate Hudson Stella McCartney is a celebrity favorite owing to her elegant and divine designs. It may come as a shock to see one of her creations in this list, and yet here we are. Kate Hudson wore this blue-grey gown for her first-ever Academy Awards appearance in 2001.
Unfortunately, nothing about Hudson’s look was flattering. The petite star’s colors washed her out, its details were excessive, and the hairdo was outrageous. In fact, many critics pointed out that the actress looked much older than 22. Thankfully for her, she has evolved into a fashionista over the years.
Meghan Trainor Meghan Trainor took the world by storm with her empowering music and body positivity movement! The ‘All About That Bass’ singer usually plays it safe on the red carpet, but this time she turned up in this daring Christian Siriano jumpsuit at the 2019 Grammys.
While the custom-made white ensemble could have been super chic, it ended up looking a tad small on the voluptuous star. The stiff shoulders didn’t do her much justice either. Still, Trainor looked radiant as ever! Maybe it was the sparkles on her outfit or the fact that she had the best arm candy possible – hubby Daryl Sabara.
Cindy Crawford Take out your most tinted pair of shades because Cindy Crawford’s Met Gala attire from 2009 is too flashy to be seen by plain eyes! The American model’s monochrome ensemble and heels did not impress us as well as the fashion critiques.
The gown was designed by Versace, and we feel sorry for how much money Cindy must have spent on this garment. All in vain! Thankfully, she did not go all glittery with her makeup! Everything else aside, that broad silver and black bracelet on Cindy’s wrist looked totally out of place!
Geena Davis Geena Davis may have won hearts with her splendid performance in ‘Thelma & Louise’, but she didn’t win any awards for her gown at the 1992 Oscars. Her black and white ruffled dress designed by Ruth Meyers and Bill Hargateat looked like something that belonged at a Las Vegas wedding than on the red carpet.
The generous ruffles, gloves, and shiny fabric made the dress look cheap, and if you thought the front was bad, the back was even worse. The pretty lady, however, smiled through it all and seemed to really enjoy the night. After all, that’s all that matters!
Joey King Joey King is as cute as a button and a gifted actress! She can pull off almost anything, but this rainbow mini by ‘The Attico’ at the 2019 People’s Choice Awards left much to be desired. While the silhouette is chic, the metallic colors and tulle made this dress look a little less glam and a bit more like a gift-wrapping paper.
Thankfully, the starlet’s swanky bob and rose gold eye makeup were on-trend. Plus, you can never go wrong with Louboutins. The good news is that Joey is still young and has plenty of time to master her red carpet look!
Helena Bonham Carter The world loves Helena Bonham Carter for her eccentric style, bold attitude, and fabulous acting. She has become a goth icon, and nowhere else do we see this more than on the red carpet. While the actress’s style has evolved over the years, her first appearance at the 1987 Oscars wasn’t her brightest fashion moment.
Helena chose a black Miss Selfridge dress that didn’t flatter her in any way. The frumpy style, oversized sleeves, odd length, and excessive tulle made it more Halloween than Academy Awards. Of course, the ’80s were full of fashion faux pas, so this one got a pass!
Charlize Theron
Charlize Theron and Dior sound like a match made in fashion heaven. Both are elegance personified, and you can’t imagine the combination going wrong, except that it did! At the 2010 Academy Awards, Charlize showed up in a lilac Dior number, which was pretty standard, except for one tiny detail.
The floral bodice swirls looked incredibly tacky, and the placement was just unfortunate. It made everyone do a double-take and wonder how Charlize of all people missed that embarrassing element. Oh well, at least she tried something risqué for once.
Scarlet Johansson Scarlet Johansson’s champagne-colored outfit for the 92nd Academy Awards did not get the best of response from her fans. The strapless Oscar de la Renta gown and the mesh design did not go too well for the occasion is what we believe. Even the trail did not seem in place, and the audience could not find the wow factor here.
She chose to walk the red carpet without excessive jewelry and kept her hair quite simple; something we feel can be avoided in the future. We wonder if Scarlet is happy with this gown or regrets it big time!
Sophie Turner We do not expect the Game Of Thrones star to go wrong with her fashion game. But well, what she wore to Kit Harrington and Rose Leslie’s wedding has to be an exception. The paps were rather shocked to see this fashion icon in the bright red dress with tall heeled boots, certainly not what you wear to a wedding ceremony.
Thankfully Turner is aware of this faux pas and regrets donning this attire, which she states only happened out of an emergency. We forgive you, girl knowing you are going to rock all your other looks!
Jennifer Lopez Even a star like Jennifer Lopez can go wrong with her outfit choices, and her 77th Annual Golden Globes gown has to be one on the list. She opted for a Valentino dress, which seemed way too extra and not her usual graceful self.
Her fans do not approve of the confusion these knot-tied bows and the presence of too many colors have created! There is no doubt that she is a gift to the audience, but here, she looks no less than a Christmas present. No worries, JLo, we won’t remember this the next time!
Megan Fox Megan Fox always manages to steal the show, and she probably did at the 2020 American Music Awards, but not for the right reasons. We spotted her wearing a green colored asymmetrical top paired with a miniskirt. Her fans surely did not find this to be her best look because they have definitely seen way better!
Instead of being the eye-grabbing element of the outfit, the single sleeve is adding confusion to the overall look. We feel the saving grace here has to be her elegant neckpiece. There is always another red carpet, Megan! We got you!
Nicole Kidman Nicole Kidman’s loose golden curls sure looked stunning at the Guild Awards ceremony, but everything below her neck was a mess! We don’t know who designed this dress, but it certainly lacked clarity in the design, concept, and finesse! Thankfully her husband Keith Urban accompanied her, and his classic well-cut black suit took some limelight off of Nicole!
We agree ruffles look chic, but excess of anything can look less flattering! The same goes for the color combination of the gown – either of these shades of pink and purple would have been sufficient. We only hope she must have learned from her mistake!
Halle Berry Won’t you agree that red carpet events look incomplete without any disaster dresses? Well, some of our favorite celebs like Halle berry would never let us down! On that note, take a look at Halle’s attire from the 2013 Oscar show. The former Bond girl’s black and silver Donatella Versace gown failed to impress the critiques and now us!
Won’t you agree that this stripped garment has to be among Berry’s most absurd experiments to date? That plunging neckline looked decent, but she seems all stiff in the ensemble. No points for the designer here!
Gwen Stefani Gwen Stefani has had many gasp-worthy fashion moments over the years, but this wasn’t one of them. The high-low gown by Vera Wang featured a long train, gathered details, and a giant bow. A highlight of the dress was the phrase “fashion icon” embellished on the hem.
This was not all – Gwen completed the look with a diamond choker, fishnet leggings, and thigh-high boots. The irony of it was that she wore it to receive her ‘Fashion Icon Award’ at the 2019 People’s Choice Awards. We love the quirky superstar, but this busy look didn’t go down well with the onlookers.
Kim Basinger Few celebrities would dare to wear something different on the red carpet, let alone design their own outfit. That’s precisely what Kim Basinger did for the 1990 Oscars. The ‘L.A. Confidential’ star strutted confidently in this half gown, half tuxedo look that did not sit well with the fashion police.
While menswear on women can look chic, Kim’s white satin ballgown just had too much going on with one collar, one exposed shoulder, and a single glove. It was neither here nor there, but we have to give the actress brownie points for trying!
Salma Hayek Salma Hayek is one heck of a stunning woman and a great actress, but even her gorgeous looks couldn’t come to her rescue when she wore this custom-made dress to the 2018 Oscars.
Designed by Gucci’s Alessandro Michele, the multi-tiered purple gown was covered in sequins all over and had huge crystal strands all across the neckline. She completed the look with a loose updo, a dark lip, and more diamonds! Onlookers and critics were baffled by Salma’s over-the-top choice. Surely someone amazing like her doesn’t need all this bling?
Alicia Vikander The Met Gala is every celebrity’s opportunity to push the fashion envelope. Of course, that doesn’t always go as planned, like in the case of Swedish actress Alicia Vikander. The year was 2016, and the organizers chose the theme of ‘Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology.’
Alicia turned up in an ensemble designed by Louis Vuitton that left onlookers scratching their heads. The leather, glitter, and goth-like boots combination gave her a ‘Tomb Raider’ look but not in a good way. Sadly, too many contrasting textures and colors took this distracting dress to a place of no return.
Bad Bunny Male artists rarely stand out on the red carpet, because most play it safe in neutral clothes. Bad Bunny, on the other hand, took ‘making an impression’ to another level at the 2018 American Music Awards. Unfortunately, it was of the wrong kind.
If the graphic blue shirt and striped pants weren’t enough, Bunny also painted a third eye on his forehead to complete his flamboyant look. Some even compared him to Tien Shinhan, an anime character from ‘Dragon Ball Z.’ One thing is for sure – if you didn’t know the Puerto Rican Reggaeton singer before, you certainly know him now!
Whoopi Goldberg Whoopi Goldberg is no fashion icon, but we do love her exuberant and larger-than-life personality. Unfortunately, she made it impossible for anyone to ignore her fashion faux-pas at the 1993 Oscars.
The paisley pantsuit with a lime-green and purple overcoat was from a Beverly Hills boutique, and certainly caught everyone’s attention. Sadly, it looked more like a Disney villain’s outfit than something that belonged on the red carpet. She ended up getting a lot of criticism for her choice, but knowing Whoopi, she probably laughed them off and had fun anyway.
Rihanna The queen of fashion, Rihanna, has something to regret and let us see what! We all remember the famous Giambattista Valli dress worn at the Grammy Awards in 2015 and we hear, she wasn’t the happiest with her outfit. Well, this gigantic gown made it look as if she had wrapped bubble gum around, and it is definitely something the star could have skipped.
Yet, we still have full faith in Riri that she won’t disappoint her fans again and will live up to the title of being our OG fashionista. Looking forward to seeing how Rihanna steals the show next time she walks the red carpet!
Kerry Washington Did we see that, right? Kerry Washington knows how to make heads turn, but at the MTV Movie Awards, everyone did it for a different reason. This black and yellow outfit did not create her usual magic for us. The fans were not too convinced with the bright yellow skirt falling in an untidy manner.
The clutch was just a little too much yellow for us to handle and she could have certainly gone with another color here. We are no fashion police but knowing Kerry and her glamorous choices; we believe she can do way better than this!
Chrissy Teigen Chrissy Teigen is known for some very witty social media remarks and, of course, her fantastic dressing sense. Her champaign-colored dress worn at The 2019 Brandweek Brand Genius Awards Gala was not the perfect pick for this beautiful woman. The complete monochrome look probably did not work too well for her and it definitely looked quite bland.
We personally did not like the material and the fall of the outfit. There have been several events where she has absolutely rocked a single shoulder dress, but we cannot say the same for this one! If we ask you to score Chrissy’s overall look, how much would you give out of ten?
Sarah Paulson Actress Sarah Paulson is as beautiful as she is talented, but even the best can make fashion blunders sometimes. Pink dresses dominated the 2019 Oscars, and Sarah’s was no different. Her fuchsia gown by Brandon Maxwell was the talk of the town for all the wrong reasons!
While the dress had many elements that we loved, it didn’t quite work when put together. The color was rich and striking, the billowing skirt took our breath away, but the voluminous top and strange cutouts left us unimpressed. Well, there’s always next time.
Katy Perry Katy Perry is no stranger to bold choices and transformations, especially when it has to do with the red carpet. The accomplished singer wore this unique Tom Ford creation to the 2017 Grammys, and it didn’t go unnoticed by fans and critics.
The drop-waist gown featured a futuristic golden top, while the 1920s-inspired bottom was made of feathers. A drastic change in fabric and style combined with the odd length of the dress wasn’t very flattering to watch. While some people compared the attire to ‘Cousin Itt,’ her makeup and hair were the only saviors!
Björk No list of ‘Memorable Red Carpet Dresses’ is complete without this iconic look by Björk. We’re talking about the infamous swan dress, of course!
Created by Marjan Pejoski, a Macedonian designer, the dress made its first public appearance at the 2001 Academy Awards and has since continued to fascinate people worldwide. At the ceremony, Björk pretended to lay an egg on the red carpet, leaving people more confused than ever. The dress may not have been the ideal choice for the Oscars, but it does have its own Wikipedia page and remains a Halloween inspiration for many.
Kylie Jenner Social media superstar and makeup mogul, Kylie Jenner cannot go wrong, or can she? At the 2019 Grammy Awards, Kylie showed up in an asymmetrical pink jumpsuit by Balmain. It was all anyone could talk about.
The space-age-inspired suit was a tad ill-fitting, and the Pepto-Bismol color didn’t help. The pièce de résistance was the matching gloves, which made people wonder how she’d be able to take any selfies that night. While it may not have been the most practical attire, we don’t think anyone other than Kylie could have pulled it off!
Tyra Banks While it’s hard to imagine, even supermodels sometimes drop the ball when it comes to their fashion choices. Like the time Tyra Banks wore an outrageously purple gown by Vera Wang at the 2000 Academy Awards, and all everyone could think of was the sugar-plum fairy!
The poufy dress may have worked for prom or as a princess costume, but seemed immature and out-of-place on the red carpet. Besides, Tyra is such a fierce and powerful personality that this was a total misfit. At least she ‘smized’ through it all.
Justin Timberlake Try looking for famous red-carpet denim outfits, and this one will inevitably pop up! Justin Timberlake and his then-lady love, Britney Spears, rocked this matching ensemble at the 2001 American Music Awards. Both Britney’s strapless dress and Justin’s tuxedo jacket and jeans incorporated various shades of blue denim. The duo even wore identical jewelry – talk about ‘couple goals’!
The pair’s denim-on-denim look may not have aged well, but it’s certainly iconic. Considering how fashion trends keep making a comeback, don’t be surprised if you see this look again on the red carpet!
Maya Rudolph Maya Rudolph has won our hearts and minds with her impeccable sense of humor! While there’s no denying that she is one of the funniest women in Hollywood, she isn’t always the most stylish.
At the 2019 Oscar’s, Maya wore a bright pink Giambattista Valli gown that perplexed many. The flowing number took ‘flower power’ to the next level with excessive ruffles and cape-like sleeves. It ended up looking more matronly than romantic. In fact, some even compared it to an old-fashioned nightgown! At least the star seemed comfortable and fierce. Go bold or go home, right?
Céline Dion In 1999, female celebrities couldn’t imagine showing up in anything but a gown to a red carpet event. Céline Dion, however, refused to conform and turned up in a white suit, slanted-brim hat, and diamond-studded Ray-Bans.
The John Galliano for Christian Dior creation was unlike anything people had ever seen at the Oscars. Dion’s pants were too broad and long, and she wore the top backward! It certainly caused a frenzy back then, but perhaps, it was just ahead of its time. We, for one, applaud the legendary singer for her fashion resistance!
Lena Dunham Lena Dunham is as gutsy and daring with her red carpet choices as with her writing, and that’s why she’s amazing! At the 2014 Emmy’s, the ‘Girls’ star literally took the cake in an ombre tiered gown and not in a good way.
Giambattista Valli’s taffeta shirt and tulle skirt weren’t well-received, with many comparing her to cotton candy and a piñata. Lena, however, held her head high and owned the look. It wasn’t the first time she was the center of attention, and it certainly won’t be the last!
